Handel in Italy: Vedendo Amor presents the “Italian Cantatas” written by Handel during his early years as a composer. Despite their beauty, they remain little known.
In this recording, the Spanish alto Miguel Ulla offers a unique reading of these Cantatas, presenting the immaculate purity of his voice accompanied solely by the continuo of a theorbo, an archlute and a Baroque guitar performed by Fernando Reyes.

"Miguel Ulla has a nicely sonorous and quite clear voice, with excellent intonation and a good sense of the emotions of the text. His phrasing emphasizes the vagaries of the text, allowing Handel's often lyrical music to emerge with considerable sensitivity. While this set of works may make a short, perhaps even pithy program, this is one that is finely tuned and shows that Ulla has a great future in this sort of Baroque repertoire."

"Ulla's voice is full and particularly rich in its lower reaches, but not plummy. His voice is free, too, with no intrusive 'h's to the more florid passages. [...] Ulla offers an interior painting here, his decorations full of expression and pain. There is real dignity here."

Review - Following in Handel's footsteps through Italy
(by Pablo Rodríguez Canfranclunes)

"The simple and successful instrumentation of these Handel pieces, applied by Miguel Ulla and Fernando Reyes, frees the voice from the constraints imposed by an ornate instrumentation, allowing it to project all the splendor of the melody, enveloped by a plucked string that allows it to breathe and develop. Perhaps we are listening to these cantatas as they sounded in those eighteenth-century palazzi."
