Ex Lumen: A Nocturnal Journey proposes a sonic path from twilight to dawn, guided by the voice of countertenor Miguel Ulla and the theorbo of Fernando Reyes. The album brings together works by Bach, Couperin, Purcell, Lully and other European masters, interpreted with an intimate and minimalist approach.

The journey includes the world premiere recording of Gaetano Veneziano’s “Adiuvanos Deus”, integrated into a musical landscape that moves through spirituality, contemplation and nocturnal serenity. The experience culminates in an improvisation inspired by Kapsberger, accompanied by the song of dawn.

Ex Lumen: A Night Journey with Voice and Theorbo (Review by Angel Antonio Chirinos Amaro)

docenotas.com - May 2025

"This digital release proposes a sonic journey that 'begins with sunset and ends with the first light of day,' as we can read on the record label's website. The journey unfolds not only from the evocation of nightfall, with the instrumental Ouverture du Ballet Royal de la Nuit, to dawn, with Kapsberger's Canarios and the calls that can be heard, but also as a non-linear journey from a French soundscape (Cambrefort, Lully, Couperin…) to Northern Europe (Purcell, Bach…). A significant stop along the way is the beautiful Adiuvanos Deus by the Neapolitan composer Gaetano Veneziano, recorded for the first time."

The Journey to the End of the Night by Miguel Ulla (Review by Pablo Rodríguez Canfranc)

catalunyapress.com - February 2025

"The young countertenor Miguel Ulla has released his fourth recording to date, in which he offers a nocturnal journey through various landscapes of European Baroque music. Accompanied exclusively by Fernando Reyes' theorbo, his voice immerses us in an almost spiritual experience reminiscent of the hours spent in the
contemplation and introspection. The different pieces that make up the album present a journey from dusk till dawn, illustrating the development of the night."
